ONDE brings together theatre, performance, music, sound production, relational art, and the resignification of public spaces. An ambulatory performance that takes place outside of conventional theatre venues, it makes use of various audio technologies (headphones, live sound, spatialized audio, etc.) accompanied by the presence of live performers. This post-pandemic creation takes a unique look at the ties that bind us across time and space, our need for others, and how we can live together, both in the present and in the future.
One of our inspirations is Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, a stream of consciousness work about six friends whose soliloquies evoke the passage of time and the images that emerge from memory. If the fabric of life as written by Woolf is the backbone of the project, its heart is the development and recording of conversations with inhabitants of the many places where we are undertaking artistic residencies. Groups of friends in different countries (Canada, Italy, France) will be invited to tell their stories from the time they met as children until their dying day. Some episodes will be shared memories, and others, the fruit of imagination, but each group (children, adults, and senior citizens) will be asked to go through all the stages of life. Through individual points of view, an existence will be traced.
Extracts of these recordings and the soundscape, created by merging original music and sounds gathered in the places visited, will converse with the narration inspired by the novel.
